Yuendumu Social Club

05/12/2010

Affectionately knows as Big Shop, Yuendumu Social Club has been around since 1967. But on a different site in until 1971, when shop was relocated to its current spot. Renovated mid 2010, the shop is now really a ‘big’ shop.

The committee is 13 Yapa people, chaired by Matthew Egan and Vice Chair Linsey Williams. The shop is currently managed by Danny and Rose Pearce. Four casual staff work in the takeaway section, tills and on the floor.

Services provided are a community store stocked weekly with fresh vegies and other groceries. Also stocked with clothing, tyres, fuel, electrical and general merchandise.

Takeaway food, with recently available nutritious home cooked daily hot meals such as boiled eggs, and chicken curry and rice. Coffee, desserts, and of course usual takeaway goodies like chips and gravy. Food can also be eaten ‘in’ in the in door and out door cafe area.

Other services include catering, ATM assistance, fork lift and driver, a community notice board, public phone access, and computers for free internet access.

It has relationships with other organisations, such as the Post Office, in the Community, from whom they receive great support.

Big Shop works closely with Mining store, collaborating on daily business and stock. Mt Theo Program rent offices and some facilities. Big Shop only stocks PAW Media DVDs, T-Shirts, and book products.

Training in retail and hospitality for Youth wishing to work at Big Shop is provided. Trainees can use this training and experience to gain employment in any retail store.

Big Shop has a preferential employment policy for Yapa. Positions working in takeaway, floor work, checkout and assistant managing are readily offered to people in the community.

Next year Big Shop hopes to get new supermarket freezer units, to expand their grocery stock. They hope to be able to give more back to the community, in areas of nutrition, services, and employment opportunities, and to assist in whatever way they can.

And Big Shop hopes to be a place again, for the community to gather, meet, sit, eat and chat, inside and outside the shop.
