Co-directors and managers Malcolm and Ruth Wall established Wallcon at the end of 2008 with the hope of contributing to Warlpiri communities through private enterprise. The provision of local employment in community based construction jobs and entry level employment at the nearby Granites Gold Mine are the primary focus for the company at the moment. Between these two initiatives, they have employed over 60 Aboriginal people in the last year. They are an independent entity, which receives no government funding at this stage.

Projects that you would have seen Wallcon working on in Yuendumu include the recently completed Dialysis Unit, the new take away at the Yuendumu Social Club Store, the PAW demountable accommodation, upgrades at Kirridi Outstation and the Dialysis Nurse House currently under construction.

At the Granites Gold Mine, operated by Newmont, the ‘Yapa crew’ work in various positions across different departments such as bus drivers, kitchen hands, machinery operators, and office workers. People then have the opportunity to move up and improve skills within the industry. Every three months Wallcon endeavours to recruit ten additional people for the crew from Yuendumu and other Warlpiri communities.
